Laurie Wonfor Nolan
Laurie Wonfor Nolan had her first solo show of large scale plein air painting in Toronto in 1999. Her immediate and honest approach to painting in the landscape now carries through to a variety of subjects and inspirations.‘With this most recent work, I have been exploring an abstract approach to painting that is very exciting and completely new for me. The great teacher and painter Charles Hawthorne said that all painting is really just spots of colour side by side. Taking this to heart, I’m giving subject matter a back seat and letting the strength of composition, colour and line take the lead.’
A graduate of the Sheridan College Illustration program, Laurie Wonfor Nolan has had a successful career as a commercial artist since 1983. She discovered a new way of responding to the world with paint in 1996 and had her first solo show of large scale ‘plein air’ landscapes in Toronto in December of 1999. Her immediate and honest approach to painting in the landscape now carries through to still life and urban subjects.
Recently, live performance painting has become a keen interest and Wonfor Nolan has had the opportunity to share the stage with a diverse group of musicians including Liala Biali, Brandi Desterheft, Ben Grossman, Mike Murley and Rita Chiarelli among others. An upcoming solo show and collaborative performance with jazz great, Jane Bunnett is scheduled for November 23rd of this year.
Wonfor Nolan currently teaches acrylic painting and offers a variety of classes and workshops at her Hespeler Studio and at the Cambridge Centre for the Arts. She recieved the Bernice Adams Memorial Award for Visual Art in 2008 and was honoured with the KW Women of Distinction Award for Arts and Culture in 2011.
